What the heck is crumb, Vernon? Crumb is the inside of bread; or inside of the crust. I have been making 5-minute whole wheat bread, but wholewheat (I found out) gernerally requres more time to rise and at about 85degrees F. I had been not letting it rise long enough. Here is where I got this quick, delicious, no knead, and easy recipe – http://www.motherearthnews.com/Real-Food/Artisan-Free-Form-Loaf.aspx .

Are whole grains good for a person? Good for health? Good for reclaiming health – even those diagnosed with cancer, or heart disease? Hell, I don’t know! Some say yes, and some say no. However, it makes sense to me that a food product that has not been processed ‘to death’ would be much better than say bleached white flour. I also prefer brown rice (still has its germ) to white rice.

Of course. . . lots of vegetables make there way to my table. I love brussel sprouts, broccoli, spinach, cucumbers, all lettuces, radishes, carrots, and more and more. Squash is good too! Winter squash actually helps make my winters even more pleasant. Ummmmm, baked Acorn squash with melted real butter and honey. Of course, throw in some garlic and onions. That makes almost anything better.

Made an apple raisen crumb pie yesterday. The pie crust was made with the tailings from almond milk that I make. I generally am not a pie baker, but after I get done squeezing the milk out of almonds, I have a lot of almond meal left over. That led me to making pies, and actually some cookies with the almond meal. Really good! Really nutritious too!

Well, I am not too sure how nutritious the pie is, but it did have 8 Braeburn apples in it, sucanat and honey as the sweetners, almond meal as the crust, and oats as part of the topping. I don’t make things too sweet. I am a light weight when it comes to sugars and sweetners. Yesterday I bought a ginger ale (I usually have one soda every 3 months), but could not drink it because it was just too sweet. For me, it was a sickening sweetness that I am glad I have developed a dis-taste for. Anyway, the pie was and still is very good! It makes a great breakfast.

That’s enough food talk for now!. . . Good Night! Vernon “Vito” Johnston
That feels really good! The honey I am talking about now is raw honey and it is alkaline. or at least on the cusp between alkaline and acidic. The reason I am experimenting with honey is to find an acceptable sweetner for some of the dishes I enjoy. One of the reasons honey landed in my lap is because of my research with the Budwig Diet. Of all the add-to-sweetners, honey is the only sweetner allowed in the Budwig Protocol – not stevia, sucanat, raw sugar, xylitol, or any cane sugar.

That raised my curiosity. Johanna Budwig says that it is nutritional. According to this one site it does everything but start your car in the morning. Here is the title “The healing power of honey: From burns to weak bones, raw honey can help.” I suppose cancer and heart health is also in there. Those are two subjects I am interested in, as well as arthritis and gout. My interest and dance with cancer can be seen here.

Here is a section from one of my favorite Alkaline Chart websites. It places honey on the cusp, but puts raw honey in the alkaline department.

There are several versions of the Acidic and Alkaline Food chart to be found in different books and on the Internet. The following foods are sometimes attributed to the Acidic side of the chart and sometimes to the Alkaline side. Remember, you don’t need to adhere strictly to the Alkaline side of the chart, just make sure a good percentage of the foods you eat come from that side.

Brazil Nuts
Brussel Sprouts
Buckwheat
Cashews

Anyway, back to my experiment using honey. I am sure it will taste just fine in hot chocolate made from cocoa and coconut milk. I have everything ready for that steaming hot cup – it just hasn’t been cool enough weather yet. The one I worked on today was homemade chocolate chunks made with cocoa, coconut oil, honey, and vanilla. It turned out great – much better tasting than the xylitol batch of chocolate chip/chunks I made (I threw them out – didn’t like the feeling nor the taste). Here is the new improved with honey Homemade Chocolate Chip/Chunk recipe. I got the idea and the basis for this from this blog.

Homemade Chocolate Chips (chunks)

1/2 cup cocoa powder (I used a Frontier Cocoa Powder, Dutch-process Certified Organic, Fair Trade Certified™, 16 Ounce Bag)
1/2 cup rapadura or sucanat (I use about a 1/4 cup of Raw Honey)
1 cup coconut oil or butter (I use only coconut oil)
1 T. vanilla

If you go to the original recipe site you can see pictures of how the cook used a glass jar in water to blend the first 3 items. All I did was use a double broiler set up. After blending/melting the first 3 ingredients, remove from heat and stir in vanilla. While it is sitting there cooling a bit, get something to pour the mix onto. That would be parchment paper. Place the parchment paper on a dinner plate, or an appropriate size cookie sheet, pour the mixture on it, and let it cool. Then place it in the refrigerator until it hardens up. It will be hard on top, but a little bit sticky where the mix meets the parchment paper. That is just the honey speaking. No big deal. After you remove the now hardened mix from the parchment paper, break it into the sizes you like. Put them into a container or plastic zip bag, and store in the frig. They are great to eat as a snack, with almonds, or coconut almond macaroons. There you have it.

Here is another chocolate post where I talk more about chocolate and its pH.

Soon to be up, I will present the Coconut Almond Macaroons made with honey for the sweetner, and ground flaxseeds soaked in coconut milk to take the place of the eggs. Good Night! Vernon “Vito” Johnston

Xylitol: Good sweetner for Cancer Alkaline Diets? Thai Coconut Pancakes?

Not sure, but after studying xylitol for a couple weeks, I picked some up at the local food cooperative. It was on sale for $5.something a pound, down from $6.something a pound. The first thing I tried it in was Thai coconut pancakes which I have adjusted to make them more alkaline. I have adjusted the original recipe. The original original follows:

Thai Coconut Pancakes

2 cups coconut milk
3 eggs beaten
1 1/2 cups rice flour
1/2 cup sweetner (I have used raw sugar, sucanat, and now xylitol)
1/2 teas sea salt
3/4 ground coconut

Mix the coconut milk in the 3 beaten eggs and then add the rest of the ingredients. Cook in skillet as a crepe. Might have to thin it a bit.

The raw sugar attempt was good, and so was the sucanat. The xylitol adventure was not as good, but I have to admit I added and adjusted the flours in an attempt to make this more alkaline. The xylitol is supposed to be alkaline; just as the sucanat is suppose to be alkaline. However, cancer enjoys feeding off of sugar, and that makes me not sure about sucanat (even though it is alkaline)as the sweetner of choice for these pancakes. Am I stuck with xylitol?

The flour adjustment is that I used 1/2 cup of millet flour, 1/2 cup of quinoa flour, and 1/2 cup of brown rice flour. The idea is to move the flours more towards alkaline. I know that quinoa, even though full of protein, is listed in the low acid column in most charts. Still, I feel good about it. Ocassionally, I will substitute one of the flours with a 1/2 cup of buckwheat flour.

The tricky part, or at least one of them, is the sweetner. I was really happy when I discovered that sucanat cane sugar is alkaline, but like I mentioned earlier, I am not sure if it feeds cancer cells or not. My guess is probably does, just not as much as refined white sugar. So what to use? It depends on how far along you are in reclaiming your health, and how alkaline is the rest of you diet?

“Vernon” you might say, “What about eggs? Aren’t those acidic?” Yes. . . and I am working on that. I have had several suggestions for substituting the eggs. One is use yogurt, another is egg white replacement, and the one I am going to try next is fresh ground flaxseeds combined in a little water. It is suppose to become a little gelatin like. I will see. I really want something that will hold the mix together when it goes into the skillet. Especially when I twist the skillet around and around to thin out the ‘crepe’. Might have to add arrowroot (tapioca starch), or some kind of other thickner like guar gum (xanthan gum). Oh well. . . I will see what happens.

Why spend so much time doing this? Because, for me and many others it is important to stay as alkaline as possible. The more ways I/we can discover and create more good tasting alkaline dishes, the more enhanced the quality of our lives become. At least it does for me. I love good tasting food. Which, speaking of tasting good, my taste buds seem to have adjusted some. Now, I wonder if they will adjust to xylitol? Good Afternoon! Vernon “Vito” Johnston

Water aerobics and winter gardening today. Had a great workout which focused on the body’s core. Exercise is good for me! Now is is time to put in what may be my last planting for the winter garden. I live in upstate Washington. It is a little different from the 4000 foot level in the California desert, where I was last winter. I had a beautiful garden going. Now, since I am here in northern Washington state close to the bay, it will be a new learning experience with the winter garden.

I am planting 12 Green Comet Broccoli starts and 10 Bright Light Swiss Chard starts. The plant stores around here don’t really cater to winter garden gardeners. Maybe that is telling me something like, “Winter gardens don’t do so well here, so we don’t the garden stores do not carry winter plants.” Of course, when I was in the high desert in southern California I was one of the few in my area that had a winter garden – and it did well. Guess I just don’t listen to what others are doing. For me. . . not only is gardening a pleasant activity, but the results produce me some very alkaline foods. I am lucky to have space to have a garden.

As you probably know Broccoli and Swiss Chard are alkaline. The only acidifying vegetables on this particular chart are corn, olives, lentils, and winter squash. Remember, all these Alkaline/Acid Food Charts are not all the same. Some say that fresh corn is alkaline, where as canned corn is acidic. Guess we just have to make up our own minds.

Here is part of a chart that classifies alkaline foods. I gleaned it from this website -

Extremely Alkaline

Lemons, watermelon.
Alkaline Forming

Cantaloupe, cayenne celery, dates, figs, kelp, limes, mango, melons, papaya, parsley, seaweeds, seedless grapes (sweet), watercress.

Asparagus, fruit juices, grapes (sweet), kiwifruit, passionfruit, pears (sweet), pineapple, raisins, umeboshi plums, and vegetable juices.
Moderately Alkaline

Apples (sweet), alfalfa sprouts, apricots, avocados, bananas (ripe), currants, dates, figs (fresh), garlic, grapefruit, grapes (less sweet), guavas, herbs (leafy green), lettuce (leafy green), nectarine, peaches (sweet), pears (less sweet), peas (fresh, sweet), pumpkin (sweet), sea salt (vegetable).

Apples (sour), beans (fresh, green), beets, bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, carob, cauliflower, ginger (fresh), grapes (sour), lettuce (pale green), oranges, peaches (less sweet), peas (less sweet), potatoes (with skin), pumpkin (less sweet), raspberries, strawberries, squash, sweet Corn (fresh), turnip, vinegar (apple cider).
Slightly Alkaline

Almonds, artichokes (jerusalem), brussel sprouts, cherries, coconut (fresh), cucumbers, eggplant, honey (raw), leeks, mushrooms, okra, olives (ripe), onions, pickles (homemade), radishes, sea salt, spices, tomatoes (sweet), vinegar (sweet brown rice).

Chestnuts (dry, roasted), egg yolks (soft cooked), essene bread, goat’s milk and whey (raw), mayonnaise (homemade), olive oil, sesame seeds (whole), soy beans (dry), soy cheese, soy milk, sprouted grains, tofu, tomatoes (less sweet), and yeast (nutritional flakes).
Neutral

Butter (fresh, unsalted), cream (fresh, raw), cow’s milk and whey (raw), margine, oils (except olive), and yogurt (plain).

Notice that my garden goodies are mostly in the “Moderately to Slightly Alkaline” departments. Too bad I cannot grow lemons where I live. I do however, buy them. We squeeze a lot of lemons and add the juice to water, as well as eat a lot of watermelon. I take pride in incorporating as many alkaline foods into my recipies that I can. That is why I like the garden. I currently have turnips, tomatoes, mustard greens, large variety of lettuces, and carrots growing, so the winter veggies I will be able to harvest this winter, while the summer crops will be toast in a month or so. I tried beets, but with little success. I do not know what went wrong. I do like the beet tops as well as the beets themselves. See this earlier post about the beet experience. Collard greens are growing the garden, but they are not very popular with me nor Alice. We like broccoli, all the lettuces, and Brussel Sprouts. No we love Brussel Sprouts. Especially steamed and eaten as a side dish or served with a Thai dish called Swimming Rama. Some may look at this recipe and say, “Vernon, it is not very alkaline.” And I would say, “No, but you can make it much more alkaline by using Stevia, Sucanat, or other more of an alkaline sweetner instead of sugar. Raw honey would work also. And the rice I use is a combination of Wild Rice, Quinoa, and Brown Jasmine. That helps a lot. Besides Brussel Sprouts, Swimming Rama is very good with fresh spinach or broccoli. BTW, I cut the Brussel Sprouts in half before steaming.

There are other goodies in the garden. I will speak of them later. Good Day! Vernon “Vito” Johnston

A funny thing happened today that was almost not so funny. My wife Alice came up to me and with a lot of concern said, “You know, I wasn’t going to tell you this, but I have had blood in my urine today and yesterday; and I am not going to any doctor.” She was actually giving me a heads up that she was not going to any hospital or doctor and was prepared to let this thing run its course.

I laughed of course, not because it was funny, but rather because I knew where this ‘blood in the urine’ was coming from. You see, I had fixed some fresh whole beets that I got from one of the local farmers yesterday as a side dish for some Vegitarian Pad Thai I made. And anybody who has eaten beets knows what I am talking about. The urine gets a red tinge from the beets; and the poop is also reddish. It looks like they have blood in them. I am still laughing. Alice had not even considered that her ‘bloody urine’ may have been caused by eating fresh steamed beets.

I probably would not have known either, if it had not been for an experience one of my friends related to me. While he was camping out at Slab City, California he noticed that his stool was coming out red. He was highly concerned and quickly made an appointment with his doctor. The doctor, after listening to his story asked, “Thom, have you been eating any beets lately?”

“Yes, why” answered Thom. Of course we all know the doctor’s answer now.

Regardless, I am very happy it was the red beets that we ate. I am also glad she mentioned it to me (grin). It certainly was a relief for Alice (grin). That would have been a lot of unnecessary worry. The only thing I have to worry about is what is going to happen to me when Alice reads this post. She might kill me! (haha!)

Beets, by the way, are very alkaline. We also ate the tops. Good Night! Vernon “Vito” Johnston

Two of my favorite foods to eat are watermelon and lemons. Watermelon has been a positive mainstay in our household. When I lived alone the only preparation I did was cut off a slice of watermelon and have at it with a spoon. That seemed easy enough, but now that Alice has taken to slicing watermelon into thick slices, cutting off the rind, cutting the pieces into various size chunks, and then storing in a container, it has become really easy and more pleasurable to eat watermelon.

I have to admit I was a potatoe and corn chip addict, especially at night while working on the computer or watching a movie. It was either that or popcorn sprayed with olive oil from a Misto M100S Gourmet Brushed Aluminum Olive Oil Sprayer. I love butter, but with all the 40 pounds I packed on after the diagnosis, and because of the meds and my doctor’s orders not to work out my body, I switched to olive oil on popcorn. That was all well and good, but I was still putting on calories. Eating things like popcorn late at night just wasn’t getting the ‘slim me’ job done. That is where the convenient chunk or six of watermelon came to the rescue. Those juicy alkaline red chunks satisfied and still satisfy my hunger and my craving for chips and popcorn. What am I going to do when watermelon season is over?

Lemon, on the other hand, is not really a food to eat, but it certainly makes a great additive in a cold glass of water or sparkling mineral water like Perrier. I think that since I was diagnosed with terminal cancer about 2 1/2 years ago I have had maybe 6 soft drinks. Soda pop is very acidic. So acidic that some say that it takes 32 glasses of water to neutralize one can of pop. That was a no brainer for me. Of those 6 sodas, I had none the first year. Out went the cokes, pepsis, and root beers. In came water, mineral water, and lemon water. I also use lemons to add to some of the food dishes I make – especially the Thai food and the salads.

The lemon drink that Alice makes is very delicious. Sometimes she adds ginger to it or even substitutes limes. Without the ginger the drink is a lemonade or a lime ade. Ocassionally she adds a sweetner like agave or raw sugar. Raw sugar is considered alkaline as well as raw honey, sucanat, and stevia – it all depends on what alkaline acid chart you are looking at. However, if you are in the middle of or beginning the process of alkalizing your body, then I would suggest that you pass on the sweetners. There have been many studies that say that cancer feeds off of sugars. But. . . if you have to have something sweet, then Stevia is probably your ticket. At the time, I just stayed away from all sweets.

You may want to know more about the ginger. What Alice does is to peel fresh ginger then cut it into chunks before she pounds it into a pulp in our Stone (Granite) Mortar and Pestle. We have the 3 cup capacity 8 inch diameter – very useful, fun, and not too small. I actually like doing the pounding too. It gives me a very ancient feeling and gets me very close to the food preparation process. Besides, my taste buds tell me it tastes better. Alice refers to it as “cooking with love.” You can also prep the ginger by putting it in a blender and zapping it. Make sure you peel and cut it into pieces first.

Then put the ginger pulp into a sauce pan and simmer it until it makes a concentrated syrupy liquid. Strain it into a container, refrigerate, and use when desired. Some people simmer it with a sweetner. But, we alkaliners know about that now. Then add whatever proportions of water, fresh squeezed lemons or limes, and the ginger syrup.

I just might have to do a video on this – especially the ginger part. In the meantime, give it a try!

Oh, one more thing about lemons. I read somewhere that when in doubt about the alkalinity of your foods just add fresh squeezed lemon. I guess they were thinking that since lemons are so powerfully alkaline that they would balance out the acid in foods. Hmmmmmmmm. . . I have heard of cold cooking meat with lemons or limes. That makes what Jim Ehmke said about raw meat being alkaline a little more palatable. But, that will be another time. Good Night! Vernon “Vito” Johnston
Some say that 6.4 pH to 6.8pH is a decent pH for a healthy human being to maintain. (My saliva pH just tested is 7.0 with the Hydrion paper strip and 6.8+ with the Phoenix pH Stick).

When I prepare a meal I am constantly on the look out for ways to add an alkaline ingredient to what my food goal is. Take the Chocolate Cocounut Macaroon for instance. I was under the impression that chocolate was acidic, and was very happy to discover differently. (See my chocolate write up). I made the following macaroons from the study of several recipes. You see, most recipes are not created with the alkaline person in mind. I had to change, and mix and match:

5 egg whites (between slightly acidic to slightly alkaline)
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract or pound a vanilla seed with mortar and pestle (slightly acidic; not sure about just the bean)
1 cup of raw sugar or even better – sucanat (slightly alkaline or better)
3 cups of flaked non sweetened coconut (fresh coconut is considered alkaline – dry is low alkaline to acidic. I use non-sweetened whichin my mind moves it more into alkaline)
1 cup or almonds pound in mortar or buzzed in blender – don’t blend too much, you might get almond butter. Just make a ground pounded meal out of it. I leave the skins on. (moderately to low alkaline)
Instead of almonds, one could opt for almond paste or experiment with almond butter

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350°F (I have a convection oven). Line cookie sheets with parchment.
In large bowl beat egg whites and extract until firm, but not dry.
In a separate bowl mix almonds or grated Almond Paste, raw sugar and coconut until the texture of small crumbs. Gently fold mixtures together.
Drop tablespoons of dough 1 inch apart onto cookie sheet, or do what I do and use your fingers to make little mountains.
Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until lightly browned on bottom and firm to the touch. The larger ‘mountains’ may have to stay in longer.
Cool cookies on wire racks. Leave plain or smear or dip with melted chocolate.

Now the chocolate (alkaline, especially if you make your own chips with sucanat. Here is an Amazon link if you want to take a look at it. I will do that recipe later. Sucanat, along with raw honey, stevia, and raw sugar are considered alkaline.

The first time I made chocolate covered macaroons I used the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Now I am researching making my own so I can control what sweetner goes into the chocolate. And speaking of alkaline charts, you will notice that all charts are not equal. You can either drive yourSelf crazy trying to figure it all out, or be easy on yourSelf and pick out what works best for you. I do that! It makes me feel good, and remember: If you believe that something is good, and you do it, it benefits you. If you believe that something is bad, and you do it, it is a very detrimental experience.

By the way. . . the macaroons turned out very tasty and delicious. A bit rough around the edges, so to speak, but I will get better. Most importantly, it is an alkaline healthy treat. . . Good Night, Vernon Vito Johnston

My wife and I were talking about chocolate and laughingly hoping it was alkaline. When I first started being more aware of what I was eating because my goal was to continue on the path of an alkaline body, I was heartbroken to see chocolate on the no no side of alkaline vs acidic. Having just come off of a dance with termninal cancer, I was pretty blissed out. What hit me next though really hurt. It was gout attacks. Not one in one big toe at a time, but two big toes at the same time. It seemed at the time that these attacks were hitting me every other week.

I had already cut out sugar. Cancer loves sugar (even though I used molasses as a Trojan horse, so to speak)! When I said good bye to sugar that also meant good bye to chocolate. I wasn’t aware at the time that certain sugars are alkaline, or at the very least they lean alkaline. Here is the fun part. Some charts put sweetners, except for Stevia, low alkaline or low acidic. Raw sugar is my sweetner of choice lately. It had been agave, but I moved away from that one for a couple of reasons. One is I really like making and eating Thai pancakes from brown rice flour, coconut milk, coconut, almond butter, eggs, and palm sugar. Palm sugar sort of melts in chunks as I cook this crepe like concoction. Well, so does raw sugar. It also is very good, and also on one of the charts I looked up, is alkaline.

What’s my point? The point is that I eliminated chocolate because I thought it was not good for me. Here is a quote that I believe to be very practical when it comes to eating and selecting the ‘right’ foods:

“Here’s a rule of thumb that will help you: If you believe that something is good, and you do it, it benefits you. If you believe that something is bad, and you do it, it is a very detrimental experience. — Abraham”

Well, obviously I thought chocolate was bad for me, so wanting to follow all the rules, I cut out chocolate. If I had not, who knows where I would have ended up along the life and death path.

Anyway . . . back to my wife and I talking about chocolate. I explained to her my humorous way to get the alleged ‘bad’ foods we want to eat to line up more with our food desires. I said the idea is to google a certain food with alkaline attached to that food, and keep researching until you find a chart that backs up your desire for that food. Chocolate was easy. This one said, “Chocolate very alkaline” . This one spoke about it as being a base or alkaline.

Some of the research pointed out that it is important to get quality chocolate. I can do that! I can that easily.

Try it! How about red meat. If you research long enough you will find references to red meat being alklaine. Of course the catch is you can’t cook it. It has to be raw. The point I am making is if you want a certain food and you think or heard it may be bad for you, then don’t eat it. Or find some research material that will line up your desires and beliefs. It is really a very big deal!

By the way, one of my favorite charts has chocolate as being acid forming. Guess, I will not look at that part of it then. Good Night! Vernon Vito Johnston

One of the questions that I have asked mySelf the last couple years is, “How do you become the person who allows a healing to take affect?” In other words, why is it that some people will undergo the same treatment for a disease as others, yet not all are ‘cured’ or ‘healed.’ What is it? What is that ingredient the ‘healed’ people have grasped intentionally or unintentionally? I am not sure, and that is the reason for this exploration. It is a journey into the unknown.

Of course, if you have read the words on my website and my dance with cancer, you can see what precipitated this question. However, what really brought this question out of me are the many emails I have gotten over the last couple of years from people who have tried many of the healing modalities, including allopathic, naturopathic, and alternative methods of healing, with little or no success. Or the even more emotional letters from others who want to know what to do because what they did do to kill their disease worked, but only for a while – now, it has returned. They want to know what to do.

Maybe, just maybe we are already that person who allows the natural state of health to once again to reunite with ourSelf. Maybe, health is already a big part of us but for some reason we are hiding out from it, or forgot what it feels like to again be truly healthy. Perhaps it was a gradual deterioration of our body that was so subtle that we did not recognize it or feel it moving into our body. Maybe it was a little pain in the knee, or a twinge of in the neck, or a tension around the eyes that said its ‘Hello’ to us and we accepted it as a part of just being a human. Maybe it was an emotional episode that struck fear, hurt, anger, or blame into our body. And being the good little ‘soldiers’ that we are we started accepting these hurts and pains as being part of the normal processes of being a human being – accepting them, holding on to the tension – emotional and physical – until the big bad ‘C’ word gets dropped on us by (in most cases) a stranger with a degree in medicine. Most of us were very healthy at one time, and I say that it is never too late to reclaim our health. At least if I am going to have a belief, that is the one I prefer to believe, and I am sticking to it!

That was my question, the one about “How do you become that person who can reclaim one’s health”, and I think it is a very good question. I hope to talk to others who are curious about this question. And I am certain that most people who get diagnosed with some deadly disease have asked that same question of themSelves, and could use a few answers. The goal of these words are not to give answers, but rather to discover them. One of the answers that I have suggested to mySelf that is related to this question is “It is not the responsibility of any doctor, lay person, or healing modality to permanently provide health to my being. It is my responsibility, and mine alone.” I am coming to the belief that any of these healing modalities are there for one reason only, and that is to suspend the disease long enough for me/us (if we so choose) to kick in our own natural health. In my case, it was a high alkaline jolt to my body via a baking soda molasses mixture that suspended it. My work, my job is to take that taste of health and run with it.

How did or how am I doing that? I continue to look for more ways to be healthy in my mind, my body, and my Spirit. The best way for me to accomplish this goal has been to make an effort to breathe and to relax. It sounds like an oxymoron to say “make an effort to relax” but in my case that is what I have had to do in order to truly relax. I could smoke a little dope, and that would most assurdly relax me. Or perhaps a beer or two, or even a glass of wine would relax me. But those relaxing methods are there only for giving us a ‘taste’ of what relaxation is or could feel like. The idea is to become the person who can relax on his or her own. That is a very good beginning in becoming the person who allows the reclaiming of one’s own natural health. More on this soon. I will include some of the things I have played with.

Good Night! Vernon “Vito” Johnston

I received a letter from a reader honestly expressing their opinion about perhaps this whole baking soda, alkaline diet, and supplement thing was just a cruel hoax when it comes to those who are dancing with cancer. This is what the person had to say:

Hi, Vern.

I have been reading your blog and your website in general since my
husband was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer on May 25th and my
mother (who lives with me) was diagnosed with stage IIc ovarian cancer
exactly one month later, June 25th.

I must admit when I first came across your website I thought it was
some sort of cruel hoax. To think that cancer could be cured with
something as simple as a change in diet, nutritional supplements,
oxygenation and sodium bicarbonate solution was a little far-fetched,
to say the least. I remember when I first came across it, before my
mom was diagnosed, and I was still in the throes of depression at my
husband’s diagnosis, I laughed. But then as I got deeper and deeper
into my research as to how to fight this thing, and in my
correspondence with several pHD doctors and alternative therapy
doctors, they all came back to pH. So then I found your website again.
I also have a “guardian angel” out in Arizona, who has cured his own
cancer using a very similar protocol, that I have grown very close to.
Between reading about your experiences and talking to him, I came up
with a protocol for my husband and mom that they’ve been using for
almost a month now.

I recently went back to your website to make sure that things are
progressing the way they should. I have them taking three teaspoons of
100% pure organic maple syrup mixed with one teaspoon of aluminum-free
baking soda (Bob’s Red Mill, to be specific). They are taking this
mixture three times a day and have been since almost a month now. My
mom reports that she is feeling the “oxygen euphoria” sensation you
write about. She’s not getting the headaches but has had some bouts of
diarrhea and stomach pain, which we feel is a good sign. My husband,
however, doesn’t report any of that. He has had a headache or two
which we’re not sure this is an effect of, but because he had 2 feet
of his colon removed upon diagnosis, his stool with be loose from this
point on. It may be that he’s not as in touch with his body as my
mother, nothing new for him, and is just not noticing the changes, but
we’re not sure.

Also, we just bought the pH strips but noticed that the range goes
from 4.0 to 7.5 so I’m thinking we’ll need to buy some that go to 8.5.
Based on this info, is there anything else you can suggest? I was
reading about the breathing exercises that you do and I think we will
research and incorporate that into our regimen. Any other ideas?

Please know that what you’re doing is such a selfless, wonderful act
of kindness that you will be rewarded for in the kingdom of God. You
and many other people that share their experiences and information so
freely are truly special people and I look at all of them as “guardian
angels” for those of us that are lost after a diagnosis like this. I
can’t wait for our own personal nightmare to be over so we can also
“pay it forward”. God bless you.

Here is my response:

Thanks for the email Debbie. . . you have been on quite a ride! Yes indeed, get some pH strips or sticks that measure above 7.5. The ones I used measured 9.0, but 8.5 would be fine. And another yes, is yes – do the breathing. Breathing that I used and continue to use is PTR Breathing. I have borrowed some other breathing techniques from Don, which also work. In fact, I mix the two. However, PTR Breathing is my primary way of oxygenating my body. I highly recommend it.

Stress is even more acidic than any food or drink one can ingest. The Breathing will lower stress by bringing in some much needed relaxation. With relaxation comes health. The body cannot help but to return to its natural state (health) when it is relaxed. So, do the breathing. And I recommend that you do it also. Things have to kind of rough for you now. At one point I did and accumlative 3 hours of PTR Breathing a day. It works!

If you need me to point to the different URLs where this info is located, let me know and I will do just that. ]

You wrote such a beautiful well thought out letter that I would like to publish it on the website’s blog. It will help a lot of other people. I will not post your name or your email address. . . Vernon “Vito” Johnston

I enjoy answering the emails I get. I think I have answered just about everyone. BTW, the letter writer went on to explain that one of her loved ones was a bit hesitant about moving into an unknown area when it comes to reclaiming ones’ health. I referred her to the option of reading this from the post “What to say to encourage loved ones to try and kill cancer via natural means: or even if they are stuck“ to that person. Part of that post follows:

Here is my response. It was written so that this person or anyone else can just read it to their loved ones who are not sure what to do:

It is as simple as this XxXx. . . let him know that “Dear Uncle, you better
start finding something to live for – even if it is playing a guitar or
listening to sweet sound of rain on your tin roof. If you are dead inside
already, then your body will surely catch up! And if you can’t find anything to
fight for and you want to live, TRULY WANT TO LIVE, then do this PTR Breathing that this one fellow, whose wife left him after 34 years of marriage, did. Cancer bit him in the prostate too. Got into his damned bones also. Now where is he? He
took life into his own hands, sucked down a little baking soda, did some focused
breathing, switched to an alkaline diet, and he reclaimed and continues to
reclaim his health.”

“Does he still do baking soda? No! Is he still on a strict alkaline diet? No!
Does he still do focused breathing? Yes! And do you know what else happened?
Well, I don’t know if it is what you want Dear Uncle, but he and his wife got
back together after three years of separation. He really enjoyed living by
himSelf, and did not expect nor even did he want to get back together, but
sometimes strange things happen. That fellow is pretty damned happy, but he was
happy even when he was living alone. Now he is on what he calls his ‘HoneyMoon’
and loves it. Been on it for 4 months now!”

“So Dear Uncle. . . do what you want, but if you like yourSelf one bit then at
least reach out and find something that gets you going. And if not, then at least
do this PTR Breathing. He says it is eye opening, life giving, and relaxing. He
says it also helped in making clear decisions about his own Well Being. As a
matter of fact Uncle, I will do it too. Might even go on an Alkaline Diet. But
first things first Uncle. Can we do this Breathing thing together? We will
compare notes.

Have fun XxXx. . . Vito”

That was the letter. I don’t know if XxXx read the letter to her uncle or not. In any case, you can read the same letter. Just substitute Uncle with brother, sister, aunt, dad, mom, friend, or whoever you want to get to read www.phkillscancer.com or get to email me, or get them to consider another natural method for reclaiming ones’ health. Maybe even get them to do a little more research, visit other health reclaiming sites, and maybe, just maybe, you may even save their lives . . . Vernon “Vito” Johnston
